Case Tampere Taxi: How a mobile game is used to onboard drivers.
Taxi Tampere is a local taxi operator in Tampere, the 3rd largest city in Finland. There has been a large reorganization of the taxi industry and licensing, which brings growing pressure to train new drivers cost-effectively. The drivers have to get familiar with the city fast, in order to pass the test for becoming a certified taxi driver.
The company took up a mobile platform, Seppo, to train their new drivers. The on-boarding game contains exercises that appear on a GPS live map. The driver completes the game tasks using his smartphone. The game helps drivers become familiar with local businesses and landmarks. For example, the driver has to find a specific hospital, pharmacy or sports centre and take a video or selfie on the spot.
The game has really helped training manager Tiina Kansikas. Creating the game was easy, and now it can be re-used for each new class. "With Seppo the driver does the training independently but he is still getting support and learning in a structured manner”, she explains. The driver can complete the game exercises over several days, while driving around the city. This makes learning more efficient.
